Today...a Genealogy of Christ
Today has been a long day. I stayed up till 3:30 this morning and then went to sleep until 9 AM. Which is only like 5.5 hours of sleep? I don't know why I did it but I just realized that I am about to do it again because I have to be up at 6 AM tomorrow. Which is only like 6 hours away from now.
So today I went to church and saw all of my friends which was awesome. But there was another awesome thing that I learned. I always knew of the genealogy of Christ, but I never knew that there was more than one account of it. I have read the whole Bible before, but I guess I never realized there were two genealogies of Christ in the bible. Matthew and Luke both give an account of this, but there is something strikingly different about each of the genealogies. Each one traces Jesus back to different people. They are the same people for awhile but then it breaks off at a point and the people because different. Also, the genealogies are inverse of each other. One starts with Abraham and goes to Jesus and the other starts with Jesus and goes to Adam. I find all of this very interesting stuff. The reason that the people are different is because one begins to follow the law side of the family (like step-brother) and the other follows the blood line.
I have been thinking about why this may have been and I have come to a tentative conclusion. As we know, Matthew was writing to the Jews and Luke was primarily writing to the Gentiles. (This can be debated, but lets just take it as fact for now). Anyway...Matthew follows the blood line of Jesus and Luke follows the blood line for awhile and then breaks of into the law side. The Jewish people would want to know about the blood line of Jesus because they are concerned with that kind of thing. So I think that Luke begins to trace the law side of Jesus for two reasons. One is that he wants to show the Gentiles that Jesus comes from people like you and me. He was tempted by the same temptations that we all have. (I think I am on to something here but I can't quite put in into words). And the second reason is because he wants to show that the prophecy of Jesus to be proven true. That is a whole different topic that I could go on forever about. I won't get into it now.
Anyway, those are just some of my thoughts. I don't know if any of those things that I said are entirely correct, but I am willing to be corrected if any of you know any better than I do.
